FOOTBALL: Nigeria was indeed the best team at AFCON 2021, yet they lost in the knockout stage – Salah

Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s captain, has responded to the Super Eagles’ early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Salah, who was named Man of the Match when the Pharaohs overcame Morocco 2-1 on Sunday, said Nigeria’s exit demonstrates how difficult the competition is.

The Pharaohs will now meet Cameroon in the semi-finals on February 3 at the Stade d’Olembe.

The Egypt captain, who scored one goal and assisted the winning goal for the seven-time champions, cited Nigeria as an example of a team that started the tournament as favorites to win it all but faded away after losing 1-0 to Tunisia in the last 16.

“In the group stage, Nigeria was the best team, and then they lost,” Salah told GOAL.

“With any game, you never know.” It’s a difficult time for everyone.

“Algeria fell at the group stage after winning it the previous time, and they had a fantastic team.”

“With one goal, Senegal qualified,” he added. “I’m not saying anything negative; I’m just stating the event is difficult.”

The Super Eagles won their opening game in Group D, defeating Egypt, and then went on to beat Sudan and Guinea Bissau.
