Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has cautioned Nigerians against electing presidents above the age of 70 in 2023.
Instead of electing leaders who are old enough to be grandfathers, he suggested that Nigerians elect a youth as president in 2023.
Makinde made the announcement on Tuesday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
He spoke at Rev Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) 65th’s birthday celebration and thanksgiving service, as well as the opening of a ministry.
Our reporter remembers that former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku, have declared desire to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Tinubu had told Buhari that he will run on the ruling All Progressives Congress’s platform (APC).
Atiku, on the other side, has stated that he will run on the Peoples Democratic Party’s platform (PDP).
However, Makinde, a PDP chieftain, has urged Nigerians to make wise choices in 2023.
He recommended them to vote for persons who are enthusiastic about serving the country.
“At the age of 75 or 78, we’ve seen a number of elder gentlemen who want to rule this country. I urge them to reconsider, and I’m warning the citizens of Oyo State and Nigeria that life is not simple.
“You can delegate and ask people to go all over the place,” he continued, “but when they report to you, if anything hasn’t been added, a few things might’ve been deleted.”
“We are, in essence, in election season, and what I will tell you as a nation is that we must choose intelligently and elect people who would have the energy to actually serve the country.”
