Dadeowo Hassan was found guilty by Justice O. O. Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court in Lagos on Tuesday.
He was charged with two counts of possession of papers used to commit internet fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the EFCC, Hassan had a paper titled MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR printed out of email rdhfdfgd21@gmail.com on or about May 4, 2021 in Lagos, with the purpose to defraud.
Hassan is accused of printing the paper from UNICC, a website where he bought an American social security number.
M. S. Owede, the prosecuting attorney, reviewed the facts of the case after he pleaded “guilty” to the charges.
The EFCC conducted a raid after receiving intelligence on the operations of cyber fraudsters residing within Victoria Garden City (VGC), according to Owede.
The lawyer stated, “This defendant was arrested with his tools: an iPhone X, an iPhone 12 Pro Max, a Nokia phone, and a Hewlett-Packard laptop.”
Hassan’s statement to the EFCC, documents from his email, and a N500,000 check given as part of a plea bargain deal were all handed over by Owede.
Exhibits P1a, P1b, P1c, P1d, P2, P3, P4, and P5 were entered in evidence against him and were labeled as Exhibits P1a, P1b, P1c, P1d, P2, P3, P4, and P5.
Haasan was found guilty as charged by Justice Abike-Fadipe and sentenced to one year in prison, with the option of a N1 million fine and 40 hours community service.
The items seized from the convict, including N500,000 bank draft, will be forfeited to the federal government.
