Erik ten Hag, the Ajax coach, has accepted in principle to become Manchester United’s new permanent manager, according to The Athletic.

Following an interview with senior club executives last month, the 52-year-old emerged as United’s top target to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, had doubts about taking over at Old Trafford and required a number of promises before agreeing to manage the restoration project.

The Dutchman has already verbally agreed to a four-year contract, but no official announcement will be made until April 17, when Ajax takes on PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Cup final.

Ten Hag is believed to have demanded complete control over the makeup of his backroom crew.

The likes of Rene Meulensteen and Steve McClaren, who both assisted legendary United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, have been linked with possible returns, as well as treble-winning defender Jaap Stam.
