Ralf Rangnick, Manchester United’s manager, has advised Paul Pogba that playing at a high level at the club is in his best interests.

Rangnick believes the 28-year-old must perform well against Middlesbrough and do everything he can to earn a place in the starting XI.

The World Cup winner is in the final five months of his contract with the Red Devils and, following the breakdown of renewal talks months ago, looks certain to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer.

Despite his impending exit, Rangnick claimed he has no problem playing Pogba for the rest of the season, adding that the midfielder must play well for himself in order to find good suitors when he decides to go.

“His contract expires in the summer, and if he wants to stay or move somewhere else in the end, he needs to show up,” he said.

“It’s not only in our club’s interest, but also in his personal interest, that he plays and produces at the finest level possible in the coming weeks.”

“So far, we haven’t talked about that [his future] at all… For Paul, it’s in his own best interests to play at a high level, put in a strong performance tomorrow, and do everything he can to make the starting XI – something that won’t happen automatically since we have other good players in his position.”
