The African Football Confederation (CAF) has rejected to shift the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final from Olembe Stadium.
Despite obtaining a report on the causes of a deadly stampede at the stadium last week, this is still the case.
A crush occurred before a round of 16 matches between hosts Cameroon and Comoros on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring 38 more.
The quarter-final match between Morocco and Egypt was moved from the Olembe to the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium as a result of the incident.
Following a meeting between the CAF’s safety and security department and the local organizing committee on Sunday, the confederation confirmed that the semifinal and final on February 3 and 6 will be held at the 60,000-seat Olembe Stadium on the outskirts of Yaounde, albeit with increased security.
“The paper highlights the extensive onsite meetings and discussions held with senior personnel of the police, gendarmerie, and military, as well as high-ranking Cameroonian Government, Defense, and Police Ministers, including the Governor of Yaounde and other stakeholders,” according to CAF’s statement on the decision, as seen by ESPN.
“The study addressed and underlined the terrible circumstances that resulted in the injuries of 38 individuals and the deaths of eight others.”
“The study also emphasized the recommendations and initiatives to guarantee that such a catastrophe never happens again.”
Burkina Faso will face Senegal in the first semifinal on February 2 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, while Cameroon will face Egypt on February 3 at the Olembe Stadium.
