On Monday, fifty (50) political thugs, believed to be loyalists of members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, attacked and battered Mr. Nnamdi Akpa, the State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Thugs allegedly attacked Akpa, the Guardian Newspapers’ Ebonyi State correspondent, just after the House meeting at the Assembly complex along Nkaliki road in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.
He was said to have contacted Sen. Pius Anyim Pius, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Tochukwu Okorie, the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, to obtain their responses to the reported expulsion of the beleaguered Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr Obasi Odefa.
Akpa, who talked to journalists shortly after being assaulted and attacked by the thugs, alleged that around 50 of them assaulted and attacked him.
“The guys that attacked me are loyal to the Speaker and number in the hundreds,” he claims. They approached me as I exited the chamber and demanded that I hand over my phone. I’m not sure why I should hand over my phone to them.
“They claimed I was texting certain individuals.” They started beating me up and taking my phone before I even realized what was going on.”
The victim, Akpa, was rescued from the hands of the thugs thanks to the intervention of the chairman of the NUJ, Ebonyi State council, Mr Tony Nwazi, and a few other journalists, according to 360 MEDIA.
Mr. Francis Nwifuru, the Speaker of the EBSHA, apologized to the victim, Akpa, and members of the NUJ, Ebonyi State Council, but faulted the Secretary, Akpa, for sending text messages to “enemies of the State Government,” adding that such an incident would not happen again in the House.
