NEWS: Obasanjo says Nigeria needs rebels to tell Buhari and other leaders the painful facts they need to hear

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated on Saturday that Nigeria needs more rebels to tell its authorities the truth.

“Our country, Nigeria, requires more rebels.” Those who are willing to look things in the eyes and say, “This isn’t right.” This is exactly right. This is something I will not participate in. Mr Obasanjo stated, “This is not good for Nigeria.”

The former president made the remarks at the Abeokuta launch of Tayo Sowunmi’s memoirs, titled “Footprints of a Rebel.”

“I’m not sure why someone would call himself a rebel,” I think as I read the book’s title, but it’s wonderful. The truth is that you have to become a rebel if you want to live a life of honesty and integrity.” Mr. Obasanjo stated.

“There might be times when you’d be asked to do something, but you’d refuse because it wasn’t right. And you’ll become a rebel if you say that. He went on to say, “You could even become a persona non grata.”

Mr Obasanjo has been a harsh critic of his successors since leaving office in 2007, writing open letters to former President Goodluck Jonathan and current President Muhammadu Buhari on many national concerns.

Mr Obasanjo, on the other hand, was notorious for being unfriendly to critics of his government, pushing people like Eidris Abdulkarem, a Nigerian rapper whose song “Nigeria Jagajaga” criticized Mr Obasanjo’s regime in 2004, to escape the country.

Human Rights Supervision said in 2003 that “the Nigerian government has been responsible for deaths, torture, and harassment of its critics during the last two years” under Mr Obasanjo’s watch.
