Rt. Revd. Christian Onyia, Bishop of the Diocese of Nike (Anglican Communion), has decried the rise in incidences of violence against women.

In an Easter letter signed by spokesman Chiwuike Uba, the religious leader warned that “no one should remain in an abusive marriage.”

He urged Nigerians to ponder on Jesus Christ’s resurrection and recommit themselves to life in peace, unity, and God’s love.

Despite the insecurity around the country, the Bishop said Nigerians should not lose faith in God and instead live in peace and unity.

“At the start of our forty-day Lenten journey, through the mark of ashes in the Sign of the Cross, we were reminded that, as humans, we will die.”

While death is unavoidable, he asserted that it no longer had power over believers since God’s word “is the same for Jesus Christ, who was crucified, died, laid in the tomb, and raised.”

Onyia urged residents not to let ethnicity, religious views, or places of origin divide Nigeria any longer.

The Bishop declared that violence against women “is both a sin and a crime” and “is never justified.”

“No one should remain in an abusive marriage. Marriages are broken by violence and abuse rather than divorce.”

The cleric further advised everyone to respond with compassion, solidarity and care for those suffering and the vulnerable.
