The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has strongly denounced security personnel’s actions at the main entrance of the Air Force Base in Makurdi, the state capital.
On his way to meet Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Ortom was denied entry to the Air Force base by security personnel on Saturday, February 12th, 2022.
The Vice President was on his way to Wukuri, Taraba State, his route to Benue, to attend the Federal University of Wukari’s convocation.
The Governor called the security personnel’s actions “unacceptable,” a “breach of procedure,” and “politics gone too far.”
He expressed sadness that he had planned to attend Professor Ignatius Ayua’s funeral but had to assign his deputy in order to greet the Vice President when he received notice of the Vice President’s transit visit via a letter from the presidency.
“Visit of His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria to Wukari, Taraba State transiting NAF Base, Makurdi, on Saturday, 12th February, 2022,” according to a letter from the State House Abuja dated 10th February, 2022, with reference VP/SP/DOP/26 and titled: “visit of His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo
The Vice President would return by the same route in the afternoon, according to the letter, which was signed by Ambassador Abdullahi Gwary.
Unfortunately, when they arrived at the Air Force’s main gate, security agents informed them that the Governor’s convoy would not be let in since they had not been alerted about the Governor’s visit to see the Vice President.
The Governor questioned why the Air Force men in the State where he is the Chief Security Officer were treating him so badly.
He promised to refer the problem to the Vice President for further action, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between politics and government.
