Giving constitutional backing to the use of electronic gadgets for the conduct of the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State, according to a political pressure group led by the Ekiti K’oya Movement, would check alleged plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress to rig the election and subvert the will of the people.

The group urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to utilize Ekiti not only to implement the new law signed by President Muhammadu Buhari last week, but also as a model for conducting credible elections across the country.

Jamiu Adeyanju, the group’s spokeswoman in Ado Ekiti, issued a statement on Sunday praising President Buhari for signing the new Electoral Law.

He claimed that signing had given Ekiti people a breather and raised their hopes that the Social Democratic Party’s candidate, Engr Segun Oni, the most popular candidate, would win the upcoming election.

With the legislative backing for the use of Smart Card Readers, electronic transmission of results, and entire digitisation of the electioneering process, Adeyanju claimed sanity would return to the country’s electoral system.

“As a result, we ask INEC to efficiently deploy the application of the new sections of the Electoral Act to achieve a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election in our dear state on June 18, 2022,” he stated.

“Because of the obvious flaws in our electoral system, we are aware of the ruling APC’s massive conspiracy to rig the election.” But, thanks to this ICT-friendly law, their nefarious plans have been thwarted, and our citizens can now vote for Engr Segun Oni, their preferred candidate.

“We are hopeful that the new legislative framework for elections would assist in making the new sing-song in town, Ekiti Koya, O To Ge (Enough Is Enough, No More Enslavement) from the APC and the People’s Democratic Party, heard loud and clear among the people.”

People in Ekiti have chosen Oni of the SDP as the best and only legitimate choice among the plethora of governorship contenders vying for the coveted position, according to Adeyanju.

The Ekiti K’oya publicist added that Oni’s solid and robust political and administrative antecedents and the inclusive government he operated during his first tenure between 2007-2010, had endeared him to the electorate, who are eagerly waiting to pay him back for his good deeds.

“We have no doubt that with the assurances from INEC to switch to full operation of the new Act, the people of Ekiti will come en masse to elect Segun Oni of the SDP as their preferred candidate and governor.

“We wish to commend President Muhammadu Buhari over the signing of the Electoral Act 2022 into law. The new law would undoubtedly help to strengthen our democracy and guarantee credible elections and a transparent electoral process.

“The introduction of reformative and progressive clauses in the new electoral act represent a major win for the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties and the electorate and it will fight voter apathy.”
