The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle over the State House of Assembly’s alleged undemocratic impeachment of the state’s Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau.
Governor Matawalle’s frantic move, according to the opposition party, is prompted by his understanding that the PDP mandate he allegedly handed to the APC is about to be recovered through legal processes and restored to the Deputy Governor.
Matawalle violated the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by “recklessly shifting to the APC when there is no division in the PDP,” according to the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.
“The illegal process of impeachment, despite a subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/ 650/2021 portends grave implications for peace and security not only in Zamfara State but throughout the North West region, as well as the continued sustenance of democracy in our country,” he added.
“Governor Matawalle should be aware that the people of Zamfara State are united behind the Deputy Governor, who has a sizable political following in the state as the custodian of the PDP mandate following Matawalle’s infamous defection to the APC. As a result, any action taken against the Deputy Governor is a direct attack on the people’s will, which they will vigorously oppose, according to the statement.
It further cautioned that any attempt to remove the Deputy Governor’s mandate from the people on the basis of baseless claims would set off a catastrophic crisis that might result in the state’s law and order system collapsing.
“Governor Matawalle must know that the people of Zamfara State cannot allow his frustration and ego to be exchanged for their mandate which is now embodied in the Deputy Governor,” the PDP warned the Zamfara State House of Assembly, adding, “Governor Matawalle must know that the people of Zamfara State cannot allow his frustration and ego to be exchanged for their mandate which is now embodied in the Deputy Governor.”
“How Governor Matawalle, out of desperation, has constituted himself into a security threat in Zamfara State and the entire North West area, where he is now threatening the lives of members of the PDP and other well-meaning citizens of Zamfara State,” the opposition party said.
It informed Nigerians about Governor Matawalle’s alleged harassment of members of the PDP’s Zamfara State Working Committee, particularly our State Deputy Chairman, Prof. Kabiru Jabaka, who was compelled to flee the state due to threats to his life.
The PDP has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to summon Governor Matawalle urgently.
