Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final match against Middlesbrough will not be played behind closed doors, according to the FA.
After fruitful conversations with Chelsea, the FA made the decision, adding that the Blues have now decided to drop their first request.
The governing body of English football announced this in a statement on Tuesday evening.
“Following fruitful discussions between the FA and Chelsea, the club has decided to withdraw its request for the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final fixture against Middlesbrough to be played behind closed doors,” the statement stated.
“The FA is continuing to work with Chelsea, the Premier League, and the Government to find a solution that allows both Chelsea and away fans to attend games at Stamford Bridge while ensuring sanctions are adhered to.”
Following the United Kingdom government’s censure on Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich, the FA Cup quarter-final fixture against Middlesbrough was requested to be played behind closed doors.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK government sanctioned Abramovich last week.
Chelsea’s request for the match to be played behind closed doors was based on “sporting integrity.”
