Roberto Martinez, Belgium’s coach, has stated that Romelu Lukaku may have to leave Chelsea in order to be included in his squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar later this year.

Since returning to Chelsea from Inter Milan last summer, Lukaku has struggled.

The 28-year-old has been axed from Chelsea’s squad and faces losing his position in the national team of his country ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

After being left on the bench for Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Burnley at the start of March, the Belgium international has not started any of Chelsea’s last four Premier League games.

Martinez believes the former Manchester United star will need to review his status ahead of this year’s World Cup in November, given he has only made twenty Premier League matches, eight of which he has started.

“We’re talking about individuals with over 100 caps, like Romelu [Lukaku], who are part of this group of players who know the national team thoroughly and out,” Martinez told The Sun.

“I’m not going to judge or assess any player’s condition until after the summer because this isn’t a typical situation.”

“It’s still seven months till the World Cup, and you’ll probably get into more depth about how a player feels as the tournament approaches.”

“However, a lot of players will change clubs or have a different attitude in the summer.”

“Romelu, like Eden Hazard and others, needs to be evaluated based on how he feels in September.”

“However, he’s one of the players for whom the summer may be a pivotal period in their careers.”
