Fabio Capello, the former England manager, has told Italian managers that they have grown preoccupied with attempting to mimic Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s style of play.

Capello said Sky Sport Italia, “Italian football has been imitating Guardiola for 15 years.”

Capello remarked this after Italy’s World Cup playoff loss to Macedonia on Thursday, a game that ended the Azzurri’s hopes of competing in Qatar in November.

Capello, who has managed a number of clubs and teams across Europe, recommended his countrymen to abandon the ineffective Spanish style of play in favor of the German approach.

‘There were no vertical passes or physical strength, and making challenges was not a habit.’ On the other side, we should emulate Jurgen Klopp’s approach to the game.

“We don’t have the technique to look at the Spanish approach; the German style is the one to follow.”

“European competition moves at a fast speed, and we aren’t used to it,” the ex-coach explained.
