According to the UK Sun, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are locked in a power struggle over the Manchester United captaincy.
Interim manager Ralph Rangnick, Ronaldo, and Maguire are said to have discussed the England defender renouncing the captaincy for the remainder of the season.
This is to relieve Maguire of some of the burden while he deals with his own lack of form.
However, the former Leicester City captain is hesitant to do so for fear of losing his captaincy permanently.
Rangnick has also insisted that Ronaldo mentor the team’s young players, which is thought to have irritated Maguire even more.
Maguire is thought to be feeling increasingly stifled by Ronaldo’s enormous influence in the dressing room, particularly among the younger players.
Within the Old Trafford dressing room, there is a growing conviction that Ronaldo will eventually take over as captain from Maguire, who has been out of form.
