Manchester United is still interested in signing RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku, but the deal will be difficult to complete.

After a sensational campaign in Germany, Nkunku is in high demand. He’s not only scored 27 goals, but he’s also racked up 17 assists. As a result, it’s no wonder that he’s on the want list of Europe’s elite clubs.

United is one of them, but there are a few stumbling blocks in their road. The first is the very real potential of no Champions League football next season at Old Trafford.

The Reds are now in seventh place, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal, who are in fifth place, have played one fewer game than them, so if they win, the gap may widen to six points.

PSG is on the lookout.
Nkunku’s inability to play Champions League football could be a problem. Especially when it could be offered by two of the other interested parties.

According to Foot Mercato, the player’s former club, Paris Saint-Germain, is interested in bringing him back. They are said to be in the box seat, but United and Manchester City are also mentioned.

The 25-year-old made a total of 55 appearances for PSG during a four-year spell. He scored eight goals before making the move to Leipzig in 2019. It is this season that he has burst in to life and the Parisians want him back.

The report also claims that PSG hope the signing would help to keep Kylian Mbappe. The two are good friends and a reunion could keep everybody happy.

Leipzig are also determined to fight off the interest. He is seen as the “jewel in their crown” and they do not want to lose him. However the transfer fee of £58million is unlikely to scare anyone off.

Nkunku is under contract until July 2024 though so Leipzig are under no pressure to cash in.

Manchester United close on new boss

If Nkunku did leave Germany and fancied England over a return to PSG, Manchester City could appeal more. City are in a better position to win trophies and can offer the Champions League.

So United do have a lot of work to do if they are to get a deal done. They remain managerless but that could be about to change. It would appear that United are closer than ever to appoint Erik ten Hag.

Once the new man is in place then the recruitment drive will move up a notch and Nkunku is high on the list.
