Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), a veteran Nollywood actor, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to impose a state of emergency.
Following an attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train and property devastation at MKO Abiola stadium following the Nigeria-Ghana match, RMD issued the statement.
Nigerians, he claims, are broken, angry, and have seen it all, which, if not managed properly, can lead to catastrophe.
RMD warned that if the government did not catch culprits and do more than promise to safeguard Nigerians, things could get worse.
“Nothing shocks or surprises us anymore; we’ve seen and heard everything.” Our leaders have enthroned ridiculousness at every level.
“This country urgently needs to declare a state of emergency.” We’re on our way to the edge of the cliff, and we don’t seem to care about slamming on the brakes.
“From here on out, it’s a free fall.” RMD stated, “The government must do more than just make pledges to catch the culprits and actually preserve the lives of WE.”
Even as he recalled his experience aboard the train, the actor expressed his condolences to the families of those that died in Kaduna.
“I was on the train to Kaduna around this time last year, and we were talking about how dangerous life is and the risks we were taking.” We’re the fortunate ones.
“I was on the Lagos/Ibadan train again a month ago, and the same specter of death and violence plagued our minds. This isn’t to say that the train travel isn’t comfortable or timely, or that it isn’t appealing.”
RMD described himself as “fortunate” to have avoided attacks on the train, but warned that anyone may become a victim if security deteriorates.
“The point is that it might be anyone on any given day.” Nothing is safe now, whether on the road, at the airport, or at the railway station. This is the extent of our disintegration.
