AFCON 2021: Malawi Coach says Mane Doesn’t Wash His Underpants

Mario Marinica, Malawi’s head coach, has expressed dissatisfaction with officials of the ongoing AFCON in Cameroon.

The coach bemoaned the conditions at Malawi’s hotel in Cameroon, claiming that high-profile players like Senegal attacker Sadio Mane don’t wash their underwear.

Malawi was defeated 2-1 by Morocco in the tournament’s round of 16 on Tuesday, marking the first time the country has reached that stage of the competition.

Marinica’s men qualified being one of the best third-placed teams in Group B, behind Senegal and Guinea.

Marinica, on the other hand, did not have an easy time in Cameroon during the competition and believes that the small countries are the victims of a deliberate bias.

He claimed that basic essentials such as milk were unavailable, and that several gamers and staff members had become ill as a result of the food poisoning.

Marinica claimed that his players and officials have been doing their own laundry, echoing similar concerns from the Gambia camp.

“You wouldn’t see Sadio Mane washing his own underwear and hanging them to dry on a bush,” Marinica said.

“We have the same situation in Gambia, and there are separate rules here, and teams are handled differently.”

“We talk about inclusivity and how we want to have minnows, tiny teams accomplishing incredible things, however when it comes to the knockout stages, people don’t want us to play against Cape Verde and Senegal not to face Morocco [for example].”

“Some questions must be asked, such as why are these things occurring to us, why only to smaller teams, why only to Comoros, Gambia, and ourselves?”

“They stated the milk was finished until tomorrow, so I couldn’t have milk for coffee.” We’re regarded as second-class citizens, but if you’re a hotel manager and you witness anything like this, you take action because you can’t tolerate that in this day and age, with so much competition.”

The Romanian coach and his Malawian team have been knocked out of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to Morocco.

Morocco advanced to the last eight of the competition thanks to goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Achraf Hakimi at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

Malawi had taken the lead in the seventh minute thanks to Frank Mhango’s goal.
