Before this tournament, Elliott had been thriving in the first team, taking advantage of manager Jurgen Klopp’s opportunity to shine.

The 18-year-old midfielder has been out since September after suffering a devastating ankle injury as a consequence of a tackle from Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk.

For the boy who grew up watching Liverpool, representing the club must have been a bizarre experience, however nothing could have topped his cameo appearance against Cardiff City this afternoon.

Elliott has acknowledged that scoring his first goal for the Reds was an amazing experience after coming off the bench to score the best of the four finishes seen at Anfield.

After the game, he wrote on Instagram, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dreamed about hitting that goal.”

“I’m wearing a Liverpool shirt.” End of the Kop. On a volley, into the bottom corner. For me and my family, it’s a dream come true!

“However, what made today even sweeter was all I’ve been through in the last 147 days.” It’s been 147 days since I last played at Anfield!

“There are too many people to thank who have stood by my side and supported me tremendously during this trip. The surgeon, my physiotherapists, coaches, staff, teammates, family, and friends – their unwavering support has helped me more than they’ll ever realize, and I’m grateful.

“Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to the fans for their love and support. The effort doesn’t end here; in fact, it’s just beginning. Let’s get this party started.”

Along with the Anfield crowd who were ecstatic for the youngster, Klopp was also full of praise for Elliott.

After the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp characterized his comeback goal as a “true fairytale.”

“Coming on is a huge step forward, but scoring the goal completes the story,” he remarked.

“Harvey Elliott’s goal was a heartfelt goal. I’ve known him for a long time and know what a wonderful talent and young man he is. It was one of the most difficult periods of my career when we lost him at Leeds.”
