Nigel Winterburn, an Arsenal veteran, reportedly advised manager Mikel Arteta against signing Jack Wilshere.
The 30-year-old former England, Arsenal, West Ham, and Bournemouth midfielder has been urged against returning to Arsenal.
Wilshere has been linked with a surprising return to Arsenal as he searches for a new club after becoming a free agent.
“If I’m being honest, I don’t see that as an option,” Winterburn told Metro.
“I’ve watched Jack’s interviews and I know he’s fit to play, but he hasn’t played in the Premier League in a long time.”
“I’ve always stood up for him because, while I’ve never been seriously harmed, I’ve seen others go through it.”
“It’s tough mentally to go back to fitness and then back into play with the first team, match by match.”
“I just don’t see it being an alternative for Mikel Arteta with all of the injuries he’s had and the time that’s passed.” If it was, I believe it would have happened by now.”
