Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has claimed that internet fraudsters, dubbed “Yahoo guys” locally, are very brilliant and that their thinking needs to be redirected towards something beneficial.
Governor Obaseki, speaking at a town hall meeting on Edo State Education Policy on Friday, said he does not condemn individuals who participated in the criminal act, but that the fundamental cause of the trend must be probed and revealed.
According to him, the government’s approach to combating human trafficking in the state would be applied to combat cybercrime.
On Monday, the governor said he will meet with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to find a solution after urging stakeholders in the state to provide him with information on the Yahoo guys’ actions.
“I am concerned,” he stated. The challenges of cyber fraud and Yahoo culture are significant.
“I am not blaming anyone who were involved. There must be a cause for the spread of that culture in Edo State. As we did in the days of human trafficking, we must identify the core causes and confront them.
“Let’s see what we can do about it because these kids must be extremely bright.” What they do and how they break into other people’s accounts. “How can we change that mindset to one that is more positive?”
