Security personnel in Niger State have gathered up bandits who raided various towns in Bida Emirate, according to the state government.
It further reported that eight of the robbers have been neutralized so far, while others are holed up along the Kaduna River’s bank.
Emmanuel Umar, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Internal Security, made the announcement at a press conference in Minna following an emergency security meeting at Government House.
He said the gunmen entered the area two days ago, and when they saw heavy security along the Wushishi livestock routes, they turned to the state’s Lavun and Kutigi Local Governments and attacked people.
“The robbers were involved in a gun battle with security and local vigilantes, during which eight bandits were slain.
They traveled to the Laun and Kutigi local governments, as well as the river Kaduna’s flanks, up to the Dabban settlement.
“They’re being rounded up in the region right now, and we’re hoping to neutralize them,” the commissioner added.
Umar stated that security agencies have fully mobilized to the region, which is being supported by airstrikes.
He reassured local citizens that the government is committed to ridding the state of terrorists.
“I am pleased to inform you that, as we implement a new strategy, security services and local communities are more devoted to eliminating terrorists,” he said.
