The House of Representatives has asked Hassan Ado Dogwa, the House Majority Leader, to travel to Ukraine to oversee the evacuation of Nigerians as a result of Russia’s invasion of major towns in the nation.
The decision came from House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila during a discussion on a motion calling for the evacuation of Nigerians on Thursday.
He noted that Nigerians currently in the nation should be returned by Monday, adding that if this is not possible, the House will work with Air Peace.
“It’s a race against the clock. I heard on the television yesterday that a state of emergency has been declared, and even America has stated that it will not be bloodless. We need to be more proactive, and I believe that now is better than never. It’s critical to put aside any bureaucratic roadblocks at this point and focus on our residents, particularly students.
“Whatever it costs the House, you (Ado Dogwa) must leave this nation by tomorrow and return with many of our kids on Monday,” he urged.
It may be remembered that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation into Ukraine, a former Soviet republic.
Several Nigerians, especially students and diplomatic personnel, are stranded in Ukraine, according to Munir Agundi, the motion’s sponsor.
He stated that the country must take all necessary steps to assure their safe return.
Mr. Allen Onyema was also involved in the evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa following the Xenophobic attacks in 2019.
