The committee has asked the National Archives for a plethora of information, including presidential records that Trump has fought to keep private.
On January 6, President Joe Biden issued an executive order directing the release of Trump White House visitor records to the House committee investigating the Capitol attack, defying the previous president’s attempts to withhold critical information from the probe.
Biden waived Trump’s executive privilege over other White House documents and information sought by the committee, and Trump tried unsuccessfully in court to prevent their release.
In a letter to the National Archives, White House lawyer Dana Remus wrote that Biden had evaluated Trump’s assertion that the data should be kept private since he was president at the time of the assault, but decided that it was ‘not in the best interest of the United States’ to do so.
Visitors logs from January 6, 2021, will be included in the documents, along with appointment information for those who were authorized to enter the White House on the day of the tragic insurgency.
Both the Biden and Obama administrations ‘voluntarily provide such visitor logs on a monthly basis,’ according to Remus.
It’s unclear whether Trump will try to halt the publication of records in federal court again.
Trump tried but failed to withhold White House documents from the House committee in a dispute that was decided by the Supreme Court.
The January 6 committee is focused on uncovering more information about Trump’s actions on the day of the insurrection, when he waited hours to tell his supporters to leave the Capitol and end the violence. They are also interested in learning more about the financing of the Washington rally the morning of the attack, where Trump encouraged his supporters to ‘fight like hell.’
The National Archives and Records Administration also reportedly had to recover at least 15 boxes of documents related to the riot from the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home.
