The second Roman Catholic President even told reporters what he would be giving up for the next 40 days.
Before travelling to the Midwest, the 79-year-old President observed Ash Wednesday in the White House. Last year, he again commemorated the occasion.
He was marked with ashes in the shape of a cross on his forehead, signaling the start of Lent.
In the 10th century, the Anglo-Saxon church practiced the application of ash to the forehead. It is thought to be the main subject of Lent.
The ashes used in Ash Wednesday are collected from the previous year’s palm burned on Palm Sunday.
However, people who weren’t aware of the same assumed something was wrong with Joe’s forehead.
The ash mark on Joe’s forehead left many concerned after speculations about President being hurt started making rounds.
But, others quickly corrected the confused Twitter users by explaining that it was ash on the POTUS’s forehead.
One tweeted: “Biden has an “old person bruise” on his head.”
“How did you get your bruise on your head? The American people deserve to know. Are you safe? Did you fall?” asked another.
Explaining the meaning of the ash mark, another wrote: “Joe Biden is a Catholic. Catholics often have a smudge of ash (sometimes in the shape of a cross) applied to their forehead by a priest during mass.”
“Dear Mr President @POTUS@JoeBiden, We know it wasn’t a forehead smudge; it was good to see your #AshWednesday faith on display during your visit to MN today. Keep keeping the faith!” read a supportive tweet.
Joe had given up on one of his favorite indulgences for Lent.
When asked what he had forsworn, the President said: “All sweets — and you know me, I start off with dessert. No ice cream, nothing,” reports New York Post.
People abstain from indulging in certain practices in the holy period which is considered as a representation of Jesus Christ’s fast for 40 days and nights.
