Because of the Ukraine crisis, the Council of Europe has removed Russia with immediate effect after 26 years of membership.
The decision was made in a special session of the Committee of Ministers, the rights body declared on Wednesday in Strasbourg, France.
Russia has previously announced its departure from the Council of Europe after taking steps to exclude it.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously voted in favor of Russia’s exclusion on Tuesday evening.
On February 28, 1996, Russia became a member of the Council of Europe.
On Tuesday, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe received information from the Russian Federation on its intention to denounce the European Convention on Human Rights, in addition to the official notification of withdrawal.
The presidents of the Council of Europe issued a statement on Tuesday evening condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine once more.
They underlined their sympathy with the people of Russia, who remain members of the European family and share its ideals.
The organization stated that it will continue to support Ukraine in its struggle against the aggressor.
The Council of Europe, which is not a member of the European Union, monitors the respect for human rights in its 46 member states.
The body reacted to the Russian invasion of Ukraine two weeks ago by suspending Russia’s membership, this decision was considered historic.
