The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, through its Central Forecast Office, warned the public on Sunday that dust haze could affect some northern Nigerian cities, causing horizontal visibility to deteriorate.

Mr. Ndkwe Adibe said in a statement on Sunday that several cities in the northern half of the country could see a steady loss in horizontal visibility as early as Sunday evening.

According to the statement, dust haze is expected to intensify before the end of the day over most parts of the Northern cities, and horizontal visibility is expected to deteriorate further from the evening of Saturday, February 19, 2022, into the next 24 – 48 hours; as thick dust haze is expected to be observed over the Northern cities, keeping visibility to 1000 meters and below over places like Maiduguri, Yobe Nguru, Potiskum, Dutse, Gombe, Yola, Bauchi,

Road users and individuals with respiratory difficulties should exercise caution, he added, adding that flight operations may be disrupted and airline operators should pick up their flight folders and follow regulations, particularly at aerodromes in the country’s northwestern regions.

A new dust plume has been raised at the source region, he claims (Faya Largeau in Chad Republic). This will likely advect into the country, reducing horizontal visibility.
