According to the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol incident, former President Donald Trump and his advisers may have committed felonies in their attempt to sway the 2020 election.

In a court filing on Wednesday, the House select committee said that Trump and several of his friends conspired to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

According to the committee’s complaint filed in US District Court for the Central District of California, ‘the Select Committee also has a good-faith basis for establishing that the President and members of his Campaign participated in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States.’

The filing, written by House general counsel Douglas Letter, claims that the committee’s evidence ‘provides, at the very least, a good-faith basis for deciding that President Trump has violated’ the obstruction charge.

The 221-page complaint accuses Trump and his associates of breaking various federal laws by pressuring state officials to reject election results.

According to the complaint, a’review of the papers may demonstrate that the president and members of his campaign committed common law fraud in connection with their efforts to alter the 2020 election results.’

The declaration was in response to a lawsuit brought by Trump adviser John Eastman, an attorney and law professor who advised the 45th president during his campaign to reverse the election.

Eastman’s attorney, Charles Burnham, argued that his client has a responsibility “to protect client confidences, even at significant personal danger and expense,” in response to Eastman’s attempt to keep documents from the panel.

‘The Select Committee has accused Dr Eastman of criminal behavior in response to his efforts to discharge this role,’ Burnham said on Wednesday.

Trump and his team have made no public statements in response to the committee’s fresh findings.

It’s unclear how much clout the filing will have because lawmakers don’t have the power to file criminal charges and can only recommend their findings to the Justice Department. The Justice Department is investigating the insurgency, which led in five deaths, but has not announced whether it intends to prosecute Trump.
