Dave Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi State, has been charged by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with terrorizing innocent Nigerians.
The onslaught on the party’s members as well as other dissenting voices in the state was condemned by the party.
Umahi is “using a heavily armed death squad, disguised under the “Ebube Agu” security outfit, as a political weapon,” according to a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba on Sunday.
The spokesman expressed his displeasure with the operatives’ “arresting and inflicting grave bodily damage” on civilians and opponents.
“Since Governor Umahi’s disastrous journey from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he is unrecognized and unhappy, he has apparently turned to frightening innocent Nigerians,” he said.
According to the scribe, the governor is attempting to instill “fear, panic, and a siege mentality” in Ebonyi as a prelude to manipulating the general elections in 2023.
The PDP urged Nigerians to remember how Umahi “instigated the illegal arrest” of Chika Nwoba, the party’s Ebonyi Publicity Secretary, and “held him in jail without justification.”
The PDP noted that the governor had declared a PDP chieftain, former House of Representatives member Linus Okorie, wanted despite no accusation or charges.
Ologunagba condemned “the violation of fundamental human rights occurring in Ebonyi” and encouraged Nigerians to hold Umahi and the APC accountable for “violence and terrorism.”
The PDP requested that Nwoba and those arrested in various facilities across the state be released immediately and unconditionally.
“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Security Adviser, and the Police High Command to intervene promptly in the situation, which poses a severe threat to Ebonyi’s and the nation’s security.”
“This is because any collapse of law and order in Ebonyi State will have repercussions throughout the country’s delicate security situation, including in the South East.”
“Governor Umahi, you must stand up and be brought to order. He’ll have to learn to live with the repercussions of his poor judgment.
“By joining a party of “political bandits” and “warlords,” he committed political suicide and should not unleash his frustration on ordinary Nigerians.”
No amount of intimidation, harassment, threats, or attacks, the statement warned Umahi and the APC, “will bend the democratic will of the people to vote them out in 2023.”
