Aliyu Usman and Sadiya Ibrahim, two repentant commercial sex workers in Bauchi State, were married as husband and wife on Monday by the Hisbah department of the Bauchi State Shariah Commission in Bauchi.

The solemnization of their union took place in a brothel in the Bayangari section of Bauchi metropolis, which is known as a red district area of the State capital, during the State government’s Hisbah department’s flag-off of the empowerment training of 575 commercial sex workers.

The event, which was attended by dignitaries such as the Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Honourable Danlami Kawule; Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Umar Kesa; and top State government officials, Shariah Commission officials, and many other commercial sex workers, was also witnessed by top State government officials and officials of the Shariah Commission.

Kesa approved the uniting of the pair previously engaging in commercial sex activities after hearing to the groom’s representative, while Kawule paid the N50,000 dowry on behalf of the groom, Aliyu Usman.

The chairman of the Shariah Commission, Sheikh Mustapha Baban-Illela, who joined the couple together at the historic occasion, claimed no one pushed them to marry.

The bride and groom were married as a pair with the agreement of the bride’s parents, according to Baban-Illela.

The wedding was held after the pair had passed a number of medical exams, according to the chairman, which certified that they were healthy and suitable to be husband and wife.

The groom, Usman, spoke on behalf of the newlywed couple, expressing gratitude to the State government, the Deputy Speaker, the Shariah Commission, and all those present for their efforts and contributions in making their goal of being married a reality.

He announced that they had both repented of their previous lifestyles, promising that “with Allah’s help, from today, we have repented from what we were doing previously, and we will change for the better.”
