Despite the fact that Daniele Orsato and Paolo Valeri have been selected as referees for Napoli’s match against Milan on Sunday, many Partenopei fans on social media recall how those two officials once cost them the Serie A title.
Napoli will meet Milan at the Stadio Maradona on Sunday night. In Serie A, both clubs are two points ahead of Inter, but the Nerazzurri have a game in hand.
The match’s referee will be Orsato, and Valeri will be in control of VAR. Many Napoli fans were disappointed by the choice, especially since Valeri and Orsato were also in charge of a tumultuous Inter-Juventus in 2018.
The Bianconeri won 3-2 at San Siro, scoring two late goals to move to the top of the standings. The following day, Napoli lost 3-0 in Florence, with Maurizio Sarri claiming that the Parteopei had ‘lost the game at their hotel’ the night before.
After an aerial duel with Rafinha, Miralem Pjanic was not awarded a second yellow card, causing criticism for Inter-Juventus. It is still remembered by Napoli fans as one of the reasons for their team’s failure to win the title in 2017-18. Because the foul did not warrant a straight red card, VAR was unable to intervene. Orsato admitted his mistake a few years later.
“It was a blunder.” I was close enough that I didn’t notice what I was seeing on TV. It was a normal aerial struggle for me. In February 2021, the international referee stated that “VAR could not intervene.”
“VAR is beneficial. We don’t think about VAR when officials step onto the field. We try our hardest, and if we make a mistake, we are fortunate in that we have VAR to fall back on.”
