The Premier League has barred Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich from serving as a director of the team.

This comes after the Russian oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government and his assets were frozen.

Despite the announcement, Chelsea will be allowed to play their games, according to a statement released by the Premier League on Saturday.

“The Premier League Board has dismissed Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club following the implementation of sanctions by the UK Government.”

“The Board’s decision has no bearing on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures,” according to a statement. “The club’s capacity to train and play its fixtures is set forth under the conditions of a licence provided by the Government that expires on May 31, 2022.”

In their next league match, the Blues will host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
