The European Union (EU) placed penalties on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on Tuesday as part of new anti-Russian measures.
Due to his strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the EU has added Abramovich to its updated list of persons facing asset freezes and visa bans.
Chelsea’s request to play their FA Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough behind closed doors on Saturday has also been withdrawn.
Chelsea initially stated that their game should be played behind closed doors because just 650 tickets were sold out of a total of 4,620 for the game at the Riverside.
They argued they were at a competitive disadvantage and that a game played behind closed doors would be “the most equitable way to proceed in the given circumstances.”
The UK government imposed fines on Abramovich last week, which will have major ramifications for Chelsea.
The Premier League club is unable to sell tickets or merchandise, and players are unable to sign new contracts.
At Stamford Bridge, only season ticket holders will be permitted to attend matches.
Abramovich has also been removed from the board of directors of the club.
