Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has urged the UK government against selling Chelsea as part of a “fire sale.”

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK government sanctioned Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich because of his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Thursday, Abramovich was slammed with an asset freeze and a travel ban after being labeled a pro-Kremlin oligarch.

Khan urged the government to make a distinction between Chelsea and the situation in Ukraine.

“I think Chelsea is a terrific Premier League club, they are the champions of Europe, the world club champions,” Khan told PA news agency.

“They were a fantastic club before the current owner, and they will continue to be a terrific club after he leaves.”

“It’s critical to distinguish Chelsea from what’s going on in Ukraine because the reality is that Russian billionaires close to Putin have been utilizing homes and businesses in London to launder money for far too long.”

“I believe it is appropriate for the government to impose sanctions and seize the assets of Russian oligarchs linked to Putin.”

“The Government will do everything it can to support Chelsea in terms of future fixtures and in terms of remaining a sustainable Premier League team,” he continued.
