Karim Benzema, a Real Madrid attacker, has confessed that winning the Ballon d’Or this year is still his top aim.
Winning means different things to different people, according to the France international.
Benzema came in fourth place, behind Chelsea’s Jorginho, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, and winner Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain.
“Finishing 4th, 3rd, 2nd, or 30th… it’s all the same, what matters is winning,” he now says.
“The Ballon d’Or, in my opinion, is for players who lead their teams, score in crucial moments, and win titles.”
“Do I have a chance to win the Ballon d’Or in 2022?” What’s to stop you? It’s something we could set as a goal. I’ll do everything I can to improve on my performance from previous season.”
Last season, the 33-year-old came close to leading Los Blancos to the LaLiga crown, scoring 23 goals. Atletico Madrid, their local rivals, beat them by two points.
Benzema also helped France to the UEFA Nations League title this season.
