Paul Merson, a former Arsenal player, has encouraged Manchester United’s next permanent manager to sell Cristiano Ronaldo if the club is to win the Premier League.
Manchester United has been linked with Mauricio Pochettino of PSG and Erik ten Hag of Ajax as permanent replacements for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.
Last November, the Red Devils fired Solskjaer and replaced him with Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.
However, Merson claims that Man United’s next manager will not be as soft as Solskjaer or Rangnick because Ronaldo has not aided anybody else in the squad and that his presence has harmed many of his colleagues.
“I don’t think the new boss will be as accommodating.” With him [Ronaldo], I don’t think it’ll work. “Winning the Premier League is not going to happen,” Merson wrote in a Sky Sports essay.
“I believed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was weak, and the way it’s gone, I think Ralf Rangnick is weak.”
“Whoever is coming in has to be quite strong.” In my opinion, you won’t win the league with a 37-year-old upfront.
“What concerns Man United is that he is their finest player and top scorer. You can’t argue he hasn’t been a success — he’s the top scorer for Manchester United, the world’s most powerful team, and he’s 37 years old.
“However, you must keep in mind that Man United is there to win championships, not merely to make up numbers and finish fourth.”
“He undoubtedly did his job, but he didn’t help anyone else by doing his job.” It may seem stupid since he’s done well, but that doesn’t imply no one else has.”
