Gareth Southgate confirms injury to Manchester United star but opens door for exiled duo. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho may now compete for a position in England’s World Cup roster thanks to Gareth Southgate, but another Manchester United player will miss some time due to injury.
The Three Lions, who haven’t won a meaningful game since last November, were denied victory in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Germany on Monday night, but they still put forth a valiant effort after coming from two goals behind.
There still seem to be plenty of spots up for grabs on the flight to Qatar later this year given England’s shaky showing in 2022, and Southgate claims that players like Rashford, Sancho, and other previous team members are all still in the running.
Asked about Rashford at his post-match press conference, Southgate said: ‘We would be foolish not to keep an open mind to especially players that have worked with us before, who we know and know us and can slot in pretty comfortably.

‘So those guys in particular [that have been part of previous squads] we’re monitoring closely.
‘But we’ve also got to keep an open mind on others because in certain positions we don’t have a lot of depth and we’ve still got to be analysing if there’s someone who can come in and improve the squad that we’ve got.’
Southgate also confirmed that Harry Maguire picked up an injury in the closing stages against Germany but decided to play on, though could now be kept out of action.
‘John Stones is feeling something with his hamstring and I think Harry is feeling something a little bit as well,’ revealed the England boss.
Harry Kane, the captain of the Three Lions, also mentioned Maguire’s “pretty bad injury” and commended the United captain for continuing through it. Kane also supported the defender after he allowed Germany to score from the penalty spot.
Kane responded, “You know any individual mistake you’re going to be gutted,” when asked about both Maguire and Nick Pope, who also committed a crucial mistake that allowed Germany to equalize. But as a team, we support one another, they grow from it, and they continue.
“Every time they’ve worn an England shirt, they’ve been brilliant for us.” At that point, H [Maguire] had a fairly significant injury, but he continued to play for another five to ten minutes essentially on one leg. He has such a terrific character, and I’m really proud of him.
