The whole London Underground network has been impacted by major tube strikes this week, with mass walkouts on Tuesday (1 March) and Thursday (3 March). Jobs, pensions, and working conditions are at issue.
Last night (2 March), the mayor of London attended the music awards ceremony to give a trophy for Best Solo Act From the United Kingdom.
Khan was booed by the audience shortly after taking the stage, causing his co-host Ghetts to quip that the mayor’s poor reception was due to London’s congestion charge.
“This is how you have a safe and legal party,” he said while on stage, referring to Prime Minister David Cameron’s Downing Street Christmas festivities.
Attendees at the show, where Irish punk band Fontaine DC won Best Band in the World, tweeted about Khan’s terrible reception, with one tweeting three skull emojis and the words “Everyone booed Sadiq Khan.”
“NME awards tonight was awful,” said another. The sound was the worst I’ve ever heard… For the first 80% of the time, I couldn’t understand anyone. Daisy and LL’s chemistry was quite unsettling. The best moment was when Sadiq Khan got a round of applause.”
“Nice to completely miss the mark and have @SadiqKhan at the @NME awards farting around and attempting to piss Boris Johnson’s party at a party, when he could be sorting out the tube strike problem,” another said. People who have to work in the morning, on the other hand, are screwed.
“Sadiq Khan is in the house, you know?” remarked Bob Vylan, a punk-grime pair who presented Reading & Leeds with the prize for Best Festival in the UK.
“Sadiq You must separate these trains. Do you follow me? You’ve got to keep this city going, man, because people have to get to work, right? Come on, we’ve got to improve.”
Newcastle artist Sam Fender took up two awards on the night, including Best Album in the World for his album Seventeen Going Under, as well as the Innovation Award for Halsey and the Icon Award for Neneh Cherry.
