In the 2021 film, the 53-year-old played Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Serena and Venus, and many have praised his moving portrayal of the patriarch.
And, 15 years after his last Academy Award nomination, he was nominated for the film in the best actor category.
The nominees were announced earlier today by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan, confirming his presence in the category.
Will will compete for the award against Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick… Boom!, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
He had previously been nominated for Ali and The Pursuit of Happiness, but did not win.
Despite the fact that the ceremony is still a few weeks away, supporters are confident that the Fresh Prince actor will win.
Flocking to Twitter to discuss the nominations, one wrote: ‘I want will Smith to have the Oscar. He Deserves it #Oscars.’
‘Will Smith better win his first Oscar even though he is going against Denzel once again. Both performances were amazing. I’m excited. I shall watch this Oscars! #Oscars,’ another agreed.
‘This is Will Smith’s time. #Oscars,’ a Twitter user predicted.
As one added: ‘The campaign begins for #KingRichard and Will Smith. #Oscars.;
King Richard has also been named in the best picture category, with Aunjanue Ellis landing a nod for best actress for her role as Brandi Williams.
Beyonce landed her first-ever Oscar nomination in the best original song category for Be Alive, with the flick tipped for best original screenplay and best editing.
