Jude Abaga, a Nigerian singer and rapper, explains why certain Nigerian youngsters engage in internet fraud, ritual killings, and other criminal activities.

M.I., as Abaga is called, believes that Nigerian youngsters are not lazy.

The musician met with 360 MEDIA on the sidelines of the Ogun TechSummit in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, which was organized by an IT specialist, Olaniyi Ayoola.

When asked why some Nigerian youths choose to engage in Yahoo-yahoo, ritual killings, and other horrible crimes rather than engage in lawful companies, Abaga responded that it was due to the youngsters’ failure to get work.

“Nigeria’s youth have been looking for work. A person must be able to glance at the indices in order to argue that they are lazy. You can’t just make that kind of assumption without first understanding the economic context.

“You can’t blame youths for being lazy or unwilling to work when unemployment is rising. The unemployment rate indicates that there are no open positions. If you look at the job market, you will notice that there has been significant gross unemployment for quite some time. When there is a high percentage of unemployment, there is also a high rate of crime, which is what we are seeing right now.

“However, the high crime rate does not reflect the mindset of young people.” It’s a sign that there’s a mechanism in place that prevents them from working.

“And because they are unable to work and must eat, they must devise a means of surviving.” That’s what we’re seeing in Nigeria right now,” he said.

Abaga, on the other hand, recommended the youths to take use of the chances that information technology provides.

“I think the creatives are sort of left as the unserious people of the society,” he said, calling for more collaboration between “creatives and the digital sphere.” What we want to demonstrate today is that creatives improve everything. They’re in charge of the tech industry.”
