The Bronx is where the genre started and the borough has an unrivaled connection to Rap, even though the early years of Hip Hop look very different than what we see today.
Fat Joe Talks OGs “Preserving The Culture” By Giving Wisdom To Next Generation. Many of our favorite artists came out of the Boogie Down, including Fat Joe, who reminisced about his youth and remembered how diverse Hip Hop was.
When Joey Crack was interviewed by HipHopDX, he said that since Hip Hop’s inception, inclusivity has been a core value. Fat Joe discusses the diversity of the genre in light of all the discussions about who belongs and who doesn’t.
“I firmly believe that you only live once (YOLO). You only have one life to live, so I just want to make the most of it artistically and creatively while I’m still here and leave a legacy so that people can continue to play my records and watch my TV shows daily “said he.
“I’m only doing that, therefore. The culture is everything to me. Growing up in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop, I was taught to love everyone. Hip-hop is practically a religion, I was told.
It had always been varied. No matter what, it was always Latino, Black, White, Asian, etc. Everybody who enjoys hip-hop music should be welcomed, as we were always taught.
I therefore have a duty to that and a responsibility to the culture that goes far beyond wealth or material success. The wealth of the culture is being preserved.
Joe added that some young rappers contact him with queries or for counsel. He invests time in fostering the upcoming generation of hitmakers in the hopes that they will pass on their knowledge as well as gain it.
“Yo, move like this, I tell ’em. Observe yourself, too. And that is the main focus. And when they pass down their knowledge to the generation behind, I want them to do the same thing.
