Femi Kuti, a Nigerian Afrobeat musician, has stated that he would prefer to be cremated when he passes away.

Cremation is the process of reducing a deceased person’s body to mostly tiny bits of bone that resemble ash by exposing the body to flame and intense heat, followed by deformation of bone fragments.

During a concert at the New Afrika Shrine on Sunday, the 59-year-old entertainer said this.

Kuti stated that he wants his funeral to be attended only by family members and friends and that he does not want a loud burial ceremony.

“Please cremate me and burn my body when I die,” he said. It’s the healthiest option.”

Femi enquired as to what happens to bodies in graves, noting that cemeteries in Lagos are not overflowing.

“Have you considered Ikoyi Cemetery?” This Lagos has existed for, say, 60 years, and people die; if they don’t die today, they will die tomorrow, and the cemetery has never been filled.

“And it’s not like it’s one million acres,” Kuti said, “because we used to bury people there when I was a kid.”
