Ed, 31, was recently found not guilty of plagiarizing Sami Chokri’s song “Oh Why” by a judge in London’s High Court, and he is eager to put the case behind him and move on with his career.

“I’m glad it’s done,” he replied. I’m relieved to be able to go on and resume songwriting.”

Ed’s hit tune, “Shape Of You,” was the focus of the copyright issue.

Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, one of his co-writers, has acknowledged that the case has harmed his mental health.

“It became so heavy and it was devouring in the last year,” he told ‘Newsnight.’ The price we paid in terms of mental health and creativity was enormous.”

Johnny, 45, also stated that there are too many “holes” in the current system.

And he’s now urging members of the music industry to have open and honest discussions regarding the problem of copyright.

“I believe the system has clear flaws right now,” he remarked. That’s a problem if I can go to a musicologist and obtain a report and then have that report used to freeze someone’s income.

“It creates a culture in which it can be used as a threat, and I believe we need to have dialogues with society, managers, artists, and songwriters to say this isn’t OK for anyone.”

Meanwhile, Ed called the plagiarism charges “baseless” lately.

Johnny, 45, also argued that the system currently has too many “holes.”

“It’s incredibly destructive to the songwriting industry,” he said. In mainstream music, there are only so many notes and so few chords.

“When 60,000 songs are released on Spotify every day, it’s sure to happen by chance.” There are only 12 notes available, therefore that’s 22 million tunes per year.”
