The Rings Of Power Pays Tribute To Dr John Dundee Payne. Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power, has earned itself plenty of attention since it wandered onto our screens, whether that’s for its eye-watering budget or mystery storylines that have intrigued and frustrated viewers in equal measure.

The final episode of season 1 packed in plenty of emotional story beats as several of these mysteries were finally solved.

But despite the twists and turns of the climactic episode, The Rings of Power finale maintained a personal touch as it paused to pay tribute to Dr John Dundee Payne just before the credits rolled.

The final episode of The Rings of Power’s first season uncovered the secrets behind many of the mysteries that have been touted throughout the season while also teasing some of the perils to come in season 2.

But before wishing viewers farewell, the series took a moment to pause as it paid tribute to Dr John Dundee Payne with a heartfelt title card.

The Rings Of Power Pays Tribute To Dr John Dundee Payne. The title card, which appeared just before the credits rolled, read:

“Dedicated to Dr John Dundee Payne 1946 – 2021.

“Now in the far green country, under a swift sunrise.”

WHO IS DR JOHN DUNDEE PAYNE?

Dr John Dundee Payne is the father of The Rings of Power’s co-showrunner J.D. Payne.

Born on January 16, 1946, Dr Payne grew up in Chicago, Illinois and went on to become a psychiatrist after studying at Northwestern Medical School.

While studying at Northwestern, according to his obituary, John met and married the love of his life, Dr Lillian Marlene Jones with whom he would start a family, going on to have three children, Jennifer, J.D. (also named John), and Heather.

During the Vietnam War, John moved to Washington DC where he served at St. Elizabeth’s mental hospital and he later completed his residency in psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital.

After completing his training, Dr Payne set up a private psychiatry practice where he helped treat patients over the following 42 years.

John passed away peacefully on November 6, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was 75.

THE DEDICATION FEATURES A TOLKIEN QUOTE

To make the tribute to Dr Payne all the more fitting, the title card also references a line from The Lord of the Rings books, one that features in both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King.

The line in question from the novels references a dream that Frodo has of Valinor as he sails to the Undying Lands.

In The Return of the King, as Frodo makes the fateful journey, the line reads: “The grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

In the film adaptation of The Return of the King, Gandalf uses the line to reassure Pippin that what comes after death “isn’t so bad” in a poignant moment that is underscored by Howard Shore’s piece of music, A Far Green Country.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream in full on Amazon Prime Video after season 1 ended on October 14, 2022.
