Barcelona chief opens door to Lionel Messi return: ‘It could be feasible’. Lionel Messi may have not played his last game for Barcelona, with the club’s economic vice president, Eduard Romeu, saying re-signing the legend could be feasible.

Messi had to leave the Camp Nou last year as Barcelona could not afford to extend his contract due to spending restraints placed on them by La Liga, so he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

It was an emotional time for the Argentine who did not want to leave Barca, nor did the club want to let him go, but the financial situation at the Catalan giants was so poor that there was no other option.

However, Barca have worked hard to get their finances in better order this summer and are seemingly in a much healthier position as a result.

Romeu says Barcelona could well be able to re-sign Messi next year, when his PSG contract runs out, if he does indeed want a return to Spain.

Barcelona chief opens door to Lionel Messi return: ‘It could be feasible’. ‘If he’d come back, it would be on a free transfer, so it could be feasible in my area,’ Romeu told Cataluyna Radio.

‘He’s a club icon, a legend, and FC Barcelona will always be his home. But his return would be a technical decision.’

Speaking to ESPN over the summer, club president Joan Laporta said: ‘I would hope that the Messi chapter isn’t over. I think it’s our responsibility to try to … find a moment to fix that chapter, which is still open and hasn’t closed, so it turns out like it should have, and that it has a more beautiful ending.’

Romeu has warned that Barcelona must be careful with their finances in the coming years, though, saying things are improving and should be in a good state next summer, but things are still not ideal.

‘We have saved the club for now, but it’s not done yet,’ he said.

‘The patient is still not completely healthy. It’s time to be austere, rigorous and work hard. When is the club going to be healthy again? During the five years we’ll spend here, surely. In the 24-25 season we expect to be at the level Barcelona must be.

‘There has been a lot of movement and changes on contracts and deferred salaries. In a couple of seasons, we expect to have a reasonable wage bill in the club.

‘Barcelona will not have economic problems next summer with the structures we have built so far.’
