CAF medical officer Joseph Kabungo was seen gasping for air near Ghana’s dressing room during Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup second-leg playoff against the Black Stars on Tuesday in Abuja, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF’s General Secretary, announced this in a statement issued by the Federation’s Department of Communications on Wednesday.
Kabungo, a Zambian, was believed to have died shortly after the Nigeria-Ghana play at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Tuesday, according to the 360Media.
Kabungo died as a result of a sudden heart arrest, according to the NFF, which was reacting to the tragic tragedy.
“The NFF expresses its condolences to FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, the Football Association of Zambia, and Dr. Kabungo’s family on his untimely death.
“His loss has caused us great grief, and we are in a state of shock.”
“According to information from our own Medical Officer, Onimisi Salami, who was appointed by FIFA as the game’s medical officer, Kabungo was found gasping for breath near the Ghanaian team’s dressing room,” he added, but added that as he (Sanusi) was heading to the Nigerian team’s dressing room, the General Coordinator, Kabore Bosilong from South Africa, had called his attention to the scene.
