On Saturday in Gbogi Isinkan II, Ward 3, Unit 14 of Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State, Mayokun Alade, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency bye-election, was chased out of his polling unit.
The incident nearly destroyed the election at the polling unit, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accusing Alade of vote-buying, but security personnel and APC leaders intervened promptly and escorted him away.
According to eyewitnesses, some people protested against the APC candidate after he was allegedly seen from afar offering money to people in order to persuade them to vote for him.
As protesters rallied against him, he was allegedly removed from the area quickly, causing a major uproar at the polling station. They claimed that this made him ineligible to vote.
Some APC members, who did not want to be identified, confirmed the incident and claimed that their candidate just bought soft drinks for party followers as a token of his gratitude.
They stated that PDP members organized to destroy their candidate’s chances by disrupting the polling unit’s voting procedure. He was denied the ability to vote, they revealed.
On the other hand, Alade denied the claim, claiming, “I did not pay anyone to vote in my favor.”
He said that he had voted before being escorted out of the premises so as not to disrupt the poll, and expressed confidence that he would win the election because of his developmental program for Akure’s growth.
