Amnesty International has voiced alarm about the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, a well-known Nigerian campaigner and publisher of Sahara Reporters.

While denouncing Sowore’s detention, Amnesty International also expressed displeasure with the activist’s attack by suspected thugs in a social media post.

The federal government, according to the human rights organization, must ensure his prompt release, adding that Nigerians have the right to peacefully express themselves.

“Amnesty International is gravely worried about Omoyele Sowore’s horrific attack today by thugs.

“We also condemn the Nigerian police’s subsequent arrest of him.” Sowore’s life has been endangered before for just speaking out for freedom and justice.

“The Nigerian authorities must release him immediately.” Those who have attacked him in the past and present must be brought to justice.

“Sowore, like all Nigerians, has the right to peacefully express themselves.”
