The assassination of a girl named Rofiat by her boyfriend and three others in the Oke Aregba neighbourhood of Abeokuta in Ogun State on Saturday sparked outrage.
360MEDIA had previously reported that Soliu, Rofiat’s boyfriend, had murdered her, cut off her head, and burned it in a local pot, ostensibly for a money ritual.
When a local community guard, Segun Adewusi, spotted the youths’ activities and reported them to the police in Adatan, their luck ran out.
Wariz Oladeinde, 17, Abdulgafar, 19, Lukman, 20, and Mustakeem, all residents of Abeokuta, were arrested by the police.
Soliu, Rofiat’s boyfriend, was apprehended by the police after originally fleeing.
The guys have all confessed to the act, according to Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun Police Spokesperson, stating they planned to use the charred human head for a money ritual.
Nigerians who couldn’t hide their disgust for the teenager’s behavior rushed to social media to share their concerns in the aftermath of the horrible incident.
Many of them recalled their ambitions when they were 17, and wondered why Nigerian kids were so enamored with the get-rich-quick mentality.
Some accused parents and guardians for failing to uphold their responsibility to raise their children and wards morally, while others condemned the country’s deteriorating value system.
Many have criticized the government for failing to offer proper leadership and governance, claiming that this is why young people turn to internet fraud and ritual killings to make quick money.
“These teenagers’ and youths’ inclination to commit crimes for money is increasingly troubling,” stated Abduljabar Ayelaagbe, the Ogun State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria. The acceptance of moral laxity in our society is, without a doubt, a root of this ailment.
“It is our collective responsibility to assist the security authorities and the administration in resolving the issue and saving our society from impending devastation.”
“Parents are no longer taking care of their responsibilities,” according to Sodiq Ojuroungbe, an investigative journalist. Society, particularly in Abeokuta, is a terrible place for children to grow up. Thousands of jobless men can be found here and there. Many of those tiny kids look up to these Yahoo Boys-turned-ritualists as role models, and bars and clubhouses are always packed. Every day is like a party here.
“Some parents even take their children to a Yahoo-Yahoo learning center.” In other cases, the mother would take her infant to a place where they can perform rituals for him. When you look around here, the one thing you see people doing that they are always proud of is this Yahoo Yahoo, it’s funny.
“For some of us, it requires God’s grace, familial background, and self-discipline not to partake in it. By the time all these tiny lads are ripe, this country will be in serious difficulty.”
Many of the kids are impacted by what they see on social media, according to Bolaji Ajose, a student at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta.
Ajose mentioned Tiktok, claiming that traditionalists use videos to sell how to earn money through fetish means.
Abiodun Adeniji, speaking, condemned a parent for encouraging his son to engage in internet fraud.
“This is where we’ve ended up.” You can’t image an elderly dad bragging about his son being a Yahoo boy and how much he enjoys it. He claims the man is reclaiming his grandfather’s stolen fortune from white people. It always perplexes me when it comes to my memories.
“Some of those guys should be arrested and sentenced accordingly alongside their parents,” Adeniji recommended.
Lovelyn Azobu, a Mass Communication graduate, also suggested that youths who indulge in internet fraud and ritual killings should be jailed alongside their parents, as well as their spouses, girlfriends, concubines, and other family members, to serve as a deterrence to others.
“Laziness, unseriousness, arrogance, and disdain for authorities are rampant among today’s youths,” Adebola Oluwaseun remarked.
“Imagine a high school dropout with no skills who claims he can’t work for anyone and travels about with his iPhone asking for clients. It’s pathetic, and we’re sitting on a nuclear bomb if parents, spiritual leaders, political leaders, and others don’t declare an emergency.
“The family is a reflection of society, and this is where today’s and tomorrow’s leaders will be picked!”
